Bangladesh is fighting the world’s worst measles outbreak this year, with 202,000 suspected cases.

About 22,000 cases were lab-confirmed between mid-March and October 9, WHO figures show.

So far, 1,147 people have died, and 94 percent of deaths were children under five.

The country’s routine vaccination programme faltered in 2025, letting the virus surge.

Experts blame weak data, inadequate outreach and gaps in vaccination coverage.

“This is a real warning to every country,” said WHO vaccine adviser Mark Jit.

Health workers describe hospitals and clinics struggling to cope with sick children.
