The US is attempting an unprecedented revival of three shuttered nuclear plants to meet rising power demand.
No commercial reactor is known to have restarted after beginning decommissioning.
The Energy Department is lending up to $4.4 billion for the effort.
The plants are Palisades in Michigan, Crane on Three Mile Island and Duane Arnold in Iowa.
Together they will restore 2.25 gigawatts, enough for roughly two million homes and businesses.
All three closed early because their power was considered too expensive.
Two now have Big Tech contracts paying a premium for carbon-free power for data centres.
