A large National Cancer Institute study found no link between total ultra-processed food intake and colorectal cancer.

Researchers analysed diet data from 461,682 American adults over about 18 years.

More than 10,000 colorectal cancer cases were documented during follow-up.

The type of food mattered: whole-grain and dairy products were linked to lower risk.

Processed meats, by contrast, were linked to a higher colorectal cancer risk.

The study, led by Erikka Loftfield, was published October 15 in PLOS Medicine.

Ultra-processed products make up more than half of US adults’ energy intake.
