Himachal Pradesh plans to more than double its postgraduate medical seats, from 277 to 597.
The 320 extra seats aim to produce more specialist doctors for the hill state.
The proposal has been sent to the National Medical Commission for approval.
Inspections of infrastructure and health facilities at the medical colleges are under way.
Seats would be added at Tanda, IGMC Shimla and colleges in Mandi, Nahan, Chamba and Hamirpur.
CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has sought Union Health Minister JP Nadda’s cooperation.
More seats would let MBBS graduates specialise without leaving the state.
