Actor Mark Ruffalo has slammed California Gov. Gavin Newsom for opposing a proposed tax on the state’s billionaires.

Proposition 40 would impose a one-time tax of 5% of net worth on billionaires living in California on Jan. 1, 2026.

The tax would be due in 2027, with payments spread over five years possible; real estate and pensions are generally excluded.

Newsom backs Proposition 42, which would bar new state taxes on financial assets and could block Prop 40.

Ruffalo wrote on X that fighting to keep billionaires untaxed should be “disqualifying” for anyone seeking higher office.

He was reposting Rep. Ro Khanna, who called Newsom a “poster child” for banning new wealth taxes.

Newsom says Californians’ retirement and life savings deserve protection from new state taxes.

Opponents warn the tax could drive the wealthy out of California; supporters say the state needs new revenue.

Both measures go before voters on the November 3 ballot.
