At least 17 people were killed in a stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on October 17.

The crush happened around 7:40 pm near the exit of the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Puja pandal.

Police said sudden rain sent crowds waiting outside surging forward in search of shelter.

An official said a public address announcement caused commotion, and people fell as the crowd rushed forward.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 17 were brought dead to hospital and 25 were being treated.

A seven-year-old girl was among those killed, the chief minister said.

The injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, and the pandal was closed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it tragic, and the state has opened a helpline and an inquiry.
