Amazon, X-energy and American Electric Power agreed to evaluate a 960-megawatt advanced nuclear plant in Sullivan County, Indiana.

Amazon will fund development and plans to buy the plant’s power under a long-term contract.

The plan calls for 12 of X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactors, each generating 80 megawatts.

The plant would sit on the former Breed Generating Station coal site, serving the grid and Amazon’s data centers.

If it reaches a final investment decision, AEP would own and operate the plant, adding reactors in phases.

It is the second project in Amazon and X-energy’s plan for more than 5 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity by 2039.

The first is the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington state, developed with Energy Northwest.

The companies expect the project to create jobs and local tax revenue if construction goes ahead.
