Apu spoke on The Simpsons for the first time in eight years in Sunday’s episode, “The Revengening.”

Indian-American actor Sunil Malhotra now voices the Kwik-E-Mart owner, taking over from Hank Azaria.

Azaria stepped away after the 2017 documentary The Problem With Apu called the character a South Asian stereotype.

The episode addressed his absence directly, with Apu scolding Springfield for having forgotten him.

Janina Gavankar debuted as the voice of Apu’s wife, Manjula, who also appears in the episode.

Executive producer Matt Selman says the Nahasapeemapetilon family will be seen and heard more often.

Malhotra told Variety the audition call “made my stomach sink,” and he was prepared to walk away.

He wanted to know if the show could bring Apu back while acknowledging past mistakes, and make the role his own.
