Former India coach Ravi Shastri says Jasprit Bumrah should mainly play Tests and be used sparingly in other formats.

Shastri wants the pacer kept fresh for next year’s ODI World Cup.

“I don’t think he should play all three formats till the ODI World Cup,” Shastri told Indian media.

Bumrah, 32, had back surgery in 2023 and missed a Test series against Sri Lanka in August with a knee injury.

He returned in T20 cricket at the Asian Games and helped India win gold.

He was recalled for the two Tests in New Zealand but will skip the five ODIs and five T20Is before them.

India’s six-week tour of New Zealand begins on October 22 with five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests.

Shastri, India coach from 2017 to 2021, has long backed workload management for fast bowlers.
