Max Healthcare has installed India's first da Vinci 5 robotic surgical systems, at Max Saket in New Delhi and Nanavati Max in Mumbai.

The system is made by California-based Intuitive, which formally introduced da Vinci 5 in India on September 18 with a focused rollout.

Its main new feature is Force Feedback, which lets surgeons feel push and pull forces on tissue through the console's hand controls.

Intuitive says it has more than 150 improvements over the da Vinci Xi and 10,000 times the computing power of earlier systems.

In India it is cleared for urologic, gynaecologic and general surgery, as well as cardiac and thoracoscopic procedures.

More than 2,000 surgeons in India have trained in robotic surgery, and over 275 da Vinci systems are installed across the country.

Indian surgeons have used da Vinci systems in more than 200,000 procedures, according to Intuitive.

Max Healthcare has not said what it paid for the two systems or which procedures will use them first.
