India's food regulator FSSAI has sent show-cause notices to Nestle India and Hindustan Unilever over alleged misleading nutrition claims, Bloomberg first reported.
For Nestle, FSSAI flagged Resource Renal Vanilla Flavour Powder, meant for kidney patients, saying it lacked the prior approval required under 2022 rules.
The regulator said that product's label also left out the mandatory vegetarian or non-vegetarian mark.
Three Nescafe drinks, including Intense Cafe Cappuccino, were labelled both "Flavoured Milk" and proprietary food. FSSAI said only Flavoured Milk applies.
For HUL, FSSAI questioned Horlicks Women's Plus claims such as "Clinically Proven to Help Improve Bone Strength in 6 Months."
It also challenged the drink's "No Added Sugar" claim, because it contains maltodextrin.
On Horlicks Mother's Plus Kesar, the regulator flagged "Healthy Birth Weight" on the label and in ads as potentially misleading.
Hindustan Unilever said its products comply and it will submit scientific and regulatory evidence. Nestle India had not immediately responded.
Both companies must reply within a set period, and FSSAI says further action may follow under food safety laws.
