Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, after more than 30 years. Early work on the next Mass Effect is canceled.

EA announced the move on Oct. 21 in a staff email, saying it will close the studio and its Edmonton workspace.

EA plans to cut about 400 jobs, roughly 3% of its staff, including about 50 at BioWare, Bloomberg News reported.

"There is nothing easy about writing those words," BioWare wrote on its blog.

Founded in 1995, BioWare made Baldur's Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. EA bought the studio in 2007.

Its recent games struggled. Anthem was poorly received, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard reportedly missed its sales goals.

EA went private in a $55 billion deal that closed in August. Polygon reported it left EA with about $18 billion in debt.

EA still owns Mass Effect and Dragon Age and has not said whether either could return with another team.

EA will keep working on Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game, Reuters reported.
