AMC Kips Bay 15 in Manhattan is set to close on Jan. 3, 2027, after the building's owner ended AMC's lease.
NYU Langone Health is under contract to buy the property at 570 Second Avenue and plans to expand outpatient care there.
AMC CEO Adam Aron posted an open letter on Oct. 24: "AMC Theatres does not want to go. Not one little bit."
Aron said AMC offered options, such as enlarging the low-rise building to hold a medical facility and a theater, or shrinking the theater.
"Sadly, any and all variations that we have proposed have fallen on closed minds," he wrote.
NYU Langone says the lease always let either AMC or the landlord end it at any time, and that this term predated its interest.
It also says AMC expressed interest in leaving years ago, and that the purchase should close early next year.
The health system points to an 11% rise in average daily emergency visits nearby since Mount Sinai Beth Israel closed in April 2025.
The theater opened on May 14, 1999, and AMC took it over in 2006. By September, a petition to save it had over 9,000 signatures.
Aron wrote that on several days last summer it ranked among the 10 most attended of AMC's more than 500 U.S. theaters.
Assembly Member Keith Powers said the building's Fairway Market has about five years left on its lease. Reports on its future differ.
An AMC spokesperson said showtimes at Kips Bay are scheduled through Jan. 3, 2027.
