Baylor fired head football coach Dave Aranda on Sunday, Oct. 25, a day after a 25-24 loss at Kansas left the Bears at 4-3.

Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman will be interim head coach for the rest of the season. He has never been a head coach before.

Kansas won when Blake Herold blocked a Baylor field goal in the final minute. It was the Jayhawks' first win over Baylor since 2007.

That was Baylor's second straight loss. The Bears started 4-1 before losing 17-6 at home to TCU.

Aranda went 40-40 in seven seasons. In 2021 he led Baylor to a school-record 12 wins, the Big 12 title and the Sugar Bowl.

Since that season the Bears are 26-31, with only one winning season, according to the AP.

Athletic director Doug McNamee called Aranda genuine and honorable but said a change in leadership was necessary for the program.

His buyout is reportedly about $12 million, according to Yahoo Sports. Baylor, a private school, has not released the figure.

McNamee said the search has started, though a permanent hire likely will not come until December.

Former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III said he would be "100 percent" interested in the job. He has no coaching experience.

Baylor plays at UCF on Friday, Oct. 30, then faces Iowa State, BYU, Texas Tech and Houston.
