Laika's stop-motion film Wildwood opened third at the North American box office with $12.27 million over the October 23 to 25 weekend.
It played in about 2,600 theaters, behind Clayface at $24 million and You Can See Everything at $19.5 million.
Early reports put the opening near $11.6 million. Updated figures raised it, and the worldwide total now stands at $15.17 million.
Travis Knight directed the film, based on the 2011 fantasy novel by Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis.
Peyton Elizabeth Lee voices Prue McKeel, a girl who goes into the forests outside Portland to find her kidnapped baby brother.
Jacob Tremblay, Angela Bassett, Carey Mulligan and Mahershala Ali are also in the voice cast. The film runs 132 minutes and is rated PG-13.
The opening more than doubled the $5.9 million start of Laika's previous film, Missing Link, in 2019.
Wildwood reportedly cost about $100 million to make before marketing, and some commentators called the debut a disappointment on that measure.
People who saw it rated it highly. It has a 99 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 97 percent audience score and an A CinemaScore.
It is Laika's sixth feature and its first in seven years. The second weekend and overseas openings will show how far it can go.
