The Iran war has cost American taxpayers $47.1 billion through mid-October, according to a new Pentagon estimate given to Congress.
The figure comes from US Central Command and is dated October 16. It is $3.5 billion more than the estimate reported in early September.
The war began in late February, when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran.
Replacing munitions used in the fighting accounts for the biggest share, at about $29 billion.
Another $11.9 billion covers extra operating costs, including support for deployed troops, and $6.1 billion is for replacing lost equipment.
The total leaves out repairs to US bases in the Middle East hit by Iranian missiles and drones. Officials have not decided whether to rebuild them.
In July, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers the war had cost about $37.5 billion.
The Congressional Budget Office warned that replacing the munitions used could take at least five years.
The White House is pressing Congress to approve a $95 billion package that would help fund the Iran war and other priorities.
