IBM says it has deployed 6,000 AI agents across its consulting workflows, working alongside people in what it calls human-digital teams.
The agents handle research, drafting deliverables, data analysis, client presentations and routine coordination work.
Human consultants remain in charge, while the agents take on mechanical tasks so people can focus on judgment and strategy.
IBM frames the deployment as augmentation that makes each consultant more capable, not automation that replaces them.
The company is also using the experience to help clients redesign their business processes around human-digital teams.
Target areas include procurement, finance, HR and customer service, where agents can take on defined, repeatable work.
The disclosure comes as markets debate whether heavy AI spending will pay off, after a CoreWeave bond rout and tech selloff.
The article notes that deploying agents in a risk-averse bank or regulated health system could prove much harder.
