The first car from Volkswagen’s partnership with Chinese EV maker Xpeng is selling far below target, a Reuters investigation found.

The ID. UNYX 08 electric SUV sold an average of just 267 vehicles a month from April to August.

Volkswagen had aimed for 3,622 monthly sales this year, according to planning documents.

At about $34,260, it faces rivals like Xiaomi’s YU7 and Zeekr’s 7X with more advanced features.

It was also sold through a limited, nascent dealer network.

China once delivered nearly 50% of Volkswagen group profits but now accounts for about 10%.

Volkswagen is cutting jobs and has threatened to close up to four German plants.
