Aamir Khan says director Rajkumar Hirani is writing the 3 Idiots sequel and should narrate the final version to him within a couple of weeks.
He gave the update at the Singapore International Film Festival, where he received the Screen Icon Award on 22 October.
Before answering, he checked with Hirani about how much he could reveal. "I am not allowed to say a lot," he said, as quoted by Variety.
"Raju is working on the script," Aamir said. Hirani would narrate the final version once he was back home. "So, fingers crossed."
The original 3 Idiots came out in 2009. Hirani directed it and wrote it with Abhijat Joshi.
Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi played three engineering students, with Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani in the cast.
Aamir first spoke about the sequel in April, telling Amar Ujala he had heard the story and found it wonderful.
He said the new story picks up the characters ten years later and keeps the humour of the first film.
No shooting schedule or release date has been announced. The makers have not said whether Madhavan, Sharman Joshi or Kareena will return.
Some reports claim shooting could start in the second half of 2026. Aamir's own account puts the project at the narration stage.
In Singapore he also recalled signing nine films in six months after Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, then watching them flop one after another.
