A petition asks the FDA to add botulism to the list of organisms that infant formula must be tested for.
It does not seek to ban any product or brand, only to require testing of finished formula and ingredients.
The petition argues no new law is needed, since the testing list is the FDA’s own and the Commissioner can amend it.
Its plan includes thirty 200-gram finished-product samples, testing of listed dairy ingredients, and farm-level traceability.
Ingredients that went through a validated spore-reduction process would be exempt, with environmental monitoring as a secondary control.
Under S. 272, passed unanimously by the Senate in April, listed organisms require one-business-day notice of findings.
The author invites comments from scientists, labs, manufacturers, pediatricians and parents by Friday, October 30, 2026.
“Babies cannot read a label or be warned,” the author writes. “The testing has to happen before the can is opened.”
