The Entertainment Software Association has asked U.S. trade authorities to target Anbernic emulation handhelds.

The trade group calls the devices “superfake” piracy enablers, Ars Technica reports.

It wants retro handhelds loaded with pirated games flagged as a “notorious market.”

The devices ship with thousands of classic games pre-installed on storage cards.

Emulation itself remains legal, but distributing game ROMs without permission does not.

The ESA is the trade group that represents major video game publishers.

Federal trade officials will review the submission over the coming weeks.

Anbernic could be barred from selling its handhelds in the US, Android Authority reports.
