India could lead the Global South in quantum technology, says DST Secretary Umesh V. Waghmare.

He told ET the Centre is likely to draft a second phase of its cyber-physical systems mission.

NM-ICPS 2.0 would combine that mission with physical artificial intelligence.

The first phase ends in December 2027, and the successor proposal is being formulated.

The National Quantum Mission, now in its third year, has a Rs 6,003.65 crore budget to 2030-31.

Waghmare said the mission has made good leaps in quantum communication.

Work is underway on quantum-resilient encryption and post-quantum cryptographic frameworks to keep data safe.
