US Vice President JD Vance defended calling H-1B visa workers “foreign indentured servants,” but said his rhetoric “may have been imperfect.”

At a town hall, he spoke of his Indian in-laws who immigrated from South India.

He said the remark criticised the visa system, not visa holders, and called some companies “visa mills.”

The row began when firms including Microsoft, Infosys, TCS and Wipro were suspended from the PERM green card programme.

India’s government called the remarks deeply offensive, and Indian professionals reacted with anger.

Indian professionals account for over 70% of approved H-1B petitions each year.

Vance argued employers have too much control because workers fear losing jobs if they complain.

The administration has not said whether the suspended firms will be readmitted to PERM.
