Masked rioters set fire to the 143-year-old town hall in Limoges, France, leaving the landmark largely destroyed.
The attack came on the night of October 17 at the end of a cost-of-living protest march.
Inaugurated in 1883, the building had been a listed historic monument since 1975.
Its roof collapsed and about two-thirds of its exterior was gone by Sunday, the regional prefect said.
Witnesses said protesters torched a police car, smashed windows and started the fire on the ground floor.
More than 15 people were taken into custody, and prosecutors opened a criminal investigation.
Across France, about 400 people were arrested as more than half a million joined over 100 marches.
Sixty officers were injured, and President Macron said those who attacked town halls would be punished.
