Srinagar MP Ruhullah Mehdi resigned from the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on 3 November and announced he is resigning from the Lok Sabha.

He made the announcement at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam, on the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi.

The move ends his 24-year association with the party, NDTV reported.

In a four-page letter, he accused the party of turning away from the mandate voters gave it in the 2024 assembly elections.

He wrote that the party had promised a struggle to restore rights, then settled for running the government and a vague promise of statehood.

Mehdi won Srinagar in June 2024 on a National Conference ticket and has spoken out on reservation, political prisoners and Article 370.

His public disagreements with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and party president Farooq Abdullah grew in the months before he quit.

Sources close to him told NDTV he has no immediate plan to join another party and wants to build a youth-led collective.

He has also made clear he will not work to destabilise the Omar Abdullah government.

He sent his resignation to Speaker Om Birla. If it is accepted, Srinagar will need a by-election.
