Ukrainian journalist Mykhailo Tkach says his detention by Austrian police in Vienna was brutal.
He said they were “being arrested like terrorists,” the Kyiv Independent reported.
Tkach said the treatment resembled a counterterrorism operation, not a standard police check.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry intervened, and Tkach was later freed from custody.
Two Ukrainians alleged to be military intelligence personnel were remanded in custody.
The Committee to Protect Journalists said Austrian authorities must urgently explain the detentions.
Diplomatic talks between Ukraine and Austria continue over the fallout.
Lawyers for those detained are preparing formal challenges in Austrian courts.
