People with active brown fat are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, depression or anxiety.
It is the largest study of its kind, published in the journal Nature.
Researchers used AI to analyse PET-CT scans from 101,243 adult patients.
The scans came from cancer care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
The team examined more than 500 diagnostic codes and six brown fat depots.
Activity in the armpit depot was most strongly tied to cardiometabolic health.
The work was led by Paul Cohen’s lab at Rockefeller University.
