Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s cop thriller Spirit, starring Prabhas and Triptii Dimri, has been postponed by nearly eight months and will now release in cinemas on October 29, 2027, on the occasion of Diwali. The new date sets up one of the biggest box-office clashes in recent memory, with the film going head-to-head with part 2 of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Rama.

Vanga announced the revised release date on Sunday morning through his official X handle, sharing a new poster of Spirit in which Prabhas sports a rugged beard, dark sunglasses and a cap. In the caption, the filmmaker wrote “Check this out” alongside an announcement that the film would release in cinemas worldwide on October 29, 2027, hailing Prabhas as “India’s Biggest Superstar” through a hashtag.

The film was earlier slated to release on March 5, 2027. The release date and the first look had been unveiled by Vanga on New Year’s Day this year, featuring an injured Prabhas in an intimate pose with co-star Triptii Dimri. With the postponement, fans of the actor-director duo will now have to wait almost eight more months to see the film on the big screen.

Spirit Postponement: Vanga Announces New Release Date

The announcement confirms a significant reshuffle in the 2027 release calendar. Spirit is Vanga’s ambitious cop drama and one of the most awaited films of Prabhas’s lineup. The director, known for Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh and the 2023 blockbuster Animal, has generated enormous expectations around the project, which pairs him once again with T-Series head Bhushan Kumar as producer.

No official reason has been given for the delay, but the shift from a March slot to the lucrative Diwali window suggests the makers want the biggest possible festive release for the film. The Diwali period has historically been among the most rewarding release windows in Indian cinema, and Vanga appears to be betting on the festival crowd for Spirit‘s opening.

Prabhas, who has delivered major pan-India successes with Baahubali and Kalki 2898 AD, commands one of the largest fan bases in the country. His collaboration with Vanga was announced to considerable fanfare, and the first-look poster drew a massive response when it was revealed at the start of the year.

Spirit vs Ramayana 2: Diwali 2027 Box-Office Clash

The Diwali 2027 slot had already been reserved last year by Namit Malhotra’s production house Prime Focus and Yash’s banner Monster Mind Creations for the release of part 2 of Ramayana. While the makers have not announced an exact release date for the sequel, they had confirmed that both parts of the adaptation would release on Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027 respectively, with part 1 arriving in cinemas worldwide on November 5 this year.

The clash means Ranbir Kapoor will find himself competing against Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Triptii Dimri — the director and co-star, respectively, of his last release, the 2023 blockbuster Animal. The irony has not been lost on trade watchers, who are already billing the Diwali 2027 face-off as a battle between two of the industry’s biggest names.

Ramayana is mounted on a staggering reported budget of Rs 4000 crore and boasts a star-studded ensemble. Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Yash plays Ravana and Sai Pallavi plays Sita. The cast also includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Arun Govil as Dasharatha, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Kunal Kapoor as Indra and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman. Interestingly, Vivek Oberoi, who plays the chief antagonist in Spirit, also features in part 1 of Ramayana as Vidyujthiva.

Spirit Release Delay: What It Means for Prabhas Fans

For Prabhas’s fans, the postponement is a mixed blessing. While the wait gets longer, the move to Diwali signals the makers’ confidence in Spirit as a tentpole event film capable of taking on the mighty Ramayana franchise. A Diwali release also gives the film a longer holiday run at the box office, which could work in its favour.

Trade analysts note that big-ticket clashes are not new to Indian cinema, and both films have enough star power to sustain themselves. However, the overlap will inevitably split screens and audience attention during the festive week, making the opening-weekend battle one of the most closely watched events in the industry calendar.

With more than a year to go before the two films lock horns, both camps are expected to intensify their promotional campaigns in the coming months. For now, Prabhas’s fans will mark October 29, 2027, on their calendars as the day Spirit finally arrives — and the day two of Indian cinema’s biggest spectacles collide.
