Sexual health may correlate with poor adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy in Black women with breast cancer

Must read

Sexual health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked in the realm of cancer care. A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology highlights the importance of addressing sexual health concerns in cancer survivors and the impact of poor adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy on sexual function.

Adjuvant endocrine therapy is a key component of treatment for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, poor adherence to this therapy is a common issue among cancer survivors, with various factors influencing patients’ ability to remain compliant with their prescribed treatment regimen. In the study, researchers found that poor adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy was associated with worse sexual function in breast cancer survivors.

The study enrolled over 1,000 breast cancer survivors who were taking adjuvant endocrine therapy and assessed their sexual function using validated questionnaires. The results showed that women who reported poor adherence to their prescribed therapy also reported lower sexual function, including decreased desire, arousal, and satisfaction.

These findings are significant as they shed light on the impact of cancer treatment on sexual health and highlight the need for healthcare providers to address sexual health concerns in cancer survivors. By incorporating sexual health assessments and interventions into routine cancer care, providers can help improve the quality of life for survivors.

In addition, healthcare providers should work with patients to identify and address barriers to adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy. This may include providing education about the importance of treatment, addressing side effects, and offering support services to help patients stay on track with their therapy.

Overall, this study underscores the importance of taking a holistic approach to cancer care that includes addressing sexual health concerns and promoting adherence to treatment. By addressing these issues, healthcare providers can help improve the overall well-being and quality of life of cancer survivors.
