The NIH awarded nearly 12 percent fewer grants in fiscal 2026, about 7,400 fewer, an AAMC analysis found.

The NIH did obligate all of its money for fiscal 2025 and 2026.
But the AAMC says spending all funds does not show the research system is healthy.
The main driver is multiyear funding, which pays whole grant budgets upfront and supports fewer projects.
Grant Witness counted 60,924 awards through September 24, the lowest in six years at that point.
Hundreds of grants frozen or terminated earlier have still not been reinstated.
