Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals convicted of “immoral acts” inside a mosque in Mecca.

The Interior Ministry named them as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar.

The executions took place on October 14 in the Mecca region after a royal order.

A court sentenced them to death under ta’zir, a discretionary punishment for offences against public morality.

The ministry did not specify the alleged acts or name the mosque.

Bangladesh says it was never told the executions were planned. Foreign minister Humaiun Kobir sought an explanation.

More than three million Bangladeshis live and work in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has executed at least 175 people this year, many of them foreigners, monitors report.
