United flight UA941 to Newark turned back to Heathrow on October 15 after the crew declared an emergency.

The Boeing 767-300ER was cruising at 32,000 feet over Manchester when pilots squawked the 7700 emergency code.

United said the jet returned to address an odor in the cabin, and passengers deplaned normally.

The airline has not explained the odor, and online claims of a burning smell are unconfirmed.

The crew considered dumping about 20 tons of fuel but abandoned that plan, AIRLIVE reported.

The 23-year-old jet landed on runway 27R around 6 p.m., met by emergency crews as a precaution.

United cancelled the flight, rebooked passengers and gave hotel vouchers to those affected.
