Netflix has renewed The Diplomat season 5, two weeks after season 4 launched on 15 October 2026. The streamer announced The Diplomat season 5 on Thursday 29 October, according to The Wrap, and said further details on the next installment will be shared at a later date. The political thriller stars Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler, and the renewal keeps the series going after a fourth season that ended with Wyler resigning from her post in the middle of a G7 meeting in Italy, according to Deadline reporting quoted by The States Journal. No cast for the new season has been confirmed yet, and no release date has been announced.
The Diplomat season 5 and the season 4 numbers
Season 4 debuted to 4.8 million views in its first week, a figure even with its debut week performance for season 3, The Wrap reported. The season then rose in its second week to 5.5 million views, making it the No. 3 most-watched English-language show on Netflix that week. Netflix said season 4 reached No. 3 on the Global Top 10 in its second week and entered the Top 10 in 63 countries, according to What’s On Netflix. The season also set a new record for owned social impressions within 13 days of launch, marking the show’s strongest social performance to date, The Wrap reported. Across all four seasons, the series has spent 13 weeks in the Top 10, reached the Top 10 in 87 countries and earned over 130 million views, according to SoCalThrills, quoting Netflix.
The quick renewal follows a pattern for the series. Netflix renewed the show for a second season just 11 days after the first season premiered, and it had already renewed the show for its third and fourth seasons before the second and third had aired, according to The Hollywood Reporter, quoted by The States Journal. Season 4 itself was greenlit at Netflix’s Upfront in May 2025, months before season 3 arrived, What’s On Netflix reported. The first season debuted on 20 April 2023, and the show has kept to an annual release schedule since then, with seasons 2, 3 and 4 all released in October, according to Screen Rant. That history has led some coverage to point to October 2027 as a possible window for The Diplomat season 5, but Netflix has not confirmed any date, and What’s On Netflix noted that filming is unlikely to get underway before 2027.
The Diplomat season 5 and who returns
Netflix confirmed that creator and showrunner Debora Cahn returns for The Diplomat season 5, What’s On Netflix reported. Cahn created the series and is writer and executive producer, with Janice Williams, Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie also serving as executive producers on season 4, according to The Wrap. No cast has been confirmed for The Diplomat season 5, but What’s On Netflix said viewers could expect Russell back as Ambassador Kate Wyler alongside Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn, plus Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah.
Season 4 added Whitford and Janney as series regulars, after introducing Whitford as Todd Penn, the First Gentleman to Janney’s President Grace Penn, The Wrap reported. They joined Russell’s Kate Wyler and Sewell’s Hal Wyler at the center of the story. The official logline for season 1, quoted by The Wrap, describes a catastrophic moment that shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she is trying to save, while President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war.
The Diplomat season 5 and what comes next
Cahn has said she has a plan for where the characters in The Diplomat season 5 end up, but she does not know how long that plan is, according to Deadline, quoted by The States Journal. Nothing in the renewal announcement suggests The Diplomat season 5 will be the last, the same report noted. That leaves the cliffhanger from season 4 open: Kate Wyler’s public resignation during the G7 meeting, and the question of what happens to the alliance she tried to stop.
Ahead of The Diplomat season 5, the series has collected awards attention along the way. Russell won the SAG Actor’s Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for season 3, while Janney won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, The Wrap reported. Season 4 shot in London through the first half of 2026 for an October release, What’s On Netflix reported.
