Baththa OTT release is set for 29 October 2026 on Netflix. The Tamil film stars Vijay Sethupathi and will stream about a month after its theatrical release on 1 October 2026. Filmfare reported the date on 26 October 2026, after Netflix announced the premiere.

Baththa OTT release languages cover five versions. The film will stream in Tamil, the original language, and in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. The dubbed versions widen the audience beyond Tamil speaking viewers, who saw the film first in cinemas.

The film is directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan. It stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role, with Sai Prithviraj and Lijomol Jose in key roles. Pinkvilla lists the film as a comedy drama, and its OTT listing gives the same cast and director for the Netflix premiere.

Baththa is set in Madras in the late 1980s. It follows Baththavachalam, a feared local figure, and Sabhari, a young boy in the same neighbourhood. Sabhari accidentally locks Baththa inside a school bathroom, and the incident changes the relationship between the two characters.

Baththa OTT release story

Baththa OTT release story starts with fear. Sabhari is frightened of Baththa after seeing one of his confrontations in the neighbourhood. Just before the summer vacation, Sabhari’s teacher confiscates his toy. Sabhari sneaks into the school early one morning to get the toy back.

After using the toilet, Sabhari accidentally locks the bathroom door from the outside. He then finds that Baththa is trapped inside. Terrified by Baththa’s threats, Sabhari runs away. He later returns with rusks and feeds Baththa through a narrow gap beneath the door.

After several days, Baththa pleads to be released and promises not to hurt his unknown captor. When Sabhari’s mother says the family must leave for their native town, Sabhari gathers the courage to open the door. He finds Baththa unconscious and calls for help at once.

After Baththa is rescued, he grows fond of Sabhari and begins to change his behaviour. He apologises to his wife, Kannima, and gives her the respect she had not received before. When Sabhari confesses that he locked the door, Baththa embraces the boy rather than turning angry.

Baththa OTT release after cinemas

Baththa OTT release comes after a theatrical run that drew praise but modest box office returns. Filmfare reports that the film received considerable appreciation from critics and audiences after its release on 1 October. The same report says that reception did not turn into the box office numbers many had anticipated.

According to figures reported by box office tracker Sacnilk, Baththa collected about Rs 33 crore gross from its theatrical run. Filmfare cites that figure in its report on the OTT premiere. The theatrical total covers the run from 1 October to the Netflix announcement.

The gap between the critical response and the box office total is part of the story of the film. A film can draw strong word of mouth and still miss a large theatrical audience, especially when viewers wait for a streaming release. The Netflix premiere now gives those viewers a chance to watch it.

Baththa OTT release was announced on Sunday, 26 October, according to Filmfare. The announcement came about four weeks after the theatrical release. The short gap between cinemas and streaming is now common for Tamil films with a Netflix deal.

Baththa OTT release and piracy

Baththa OTT release also comes amid piracy concerns for the film. Filmfare reports that clips from the film have circulated widely across social media platforms. The report says the piracy problem has added to the problems faced by a film that had positive word of mouth but a modest commercial run.

Piracy clips can cut into both theatrical and streaming audiences, since viewers may watch parts of a film online instead of paying to watch the full film. For Baththa, the clips circulated before the Netflix premiere, while the film was still in its theatrical window.

The Netflix release gives viewers a legal way to watch the full film in five languages. The platform listing carries the film in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam from 29 October. Viewers who missed the film in cinemas can now watch it in full on Netflix.

Baththa OTT release stars Vijay Sethupathi, Sai Prithviraj and Lijomol Jose, and is directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan. It premieres on Netflix on 29 October 2026, about a month after its 1 October theatrical release.
