Brian White scored his 100th Major League Soccer goal as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Diego FC 4-1 on Wednesday night, Oct. 28, 2026, at BC Place in Vancouver. The win stretched Vancouver’s lead at the top of the Western Conference to four points, with two regular-season games left. A crowd of 21,718 watched at BC Place.

White reached the mark late in the first half. He directed in a header off a shot from midfielder Oliver Larraz in the 42nd minute, after ending a five-match scoring drought. The goal was his 18th MLS goal of the season and his 19th across all competitions this year. White, 30, now has 98 goals as a Whitecap across all competitions since joining the club in 2021. Counting the regular season and playoffs combined, he became the 17th player in league history to reach 100 MLS goals.

White made his MLS debut with the New York Red Bulls in 2018. His goal on Wednesday put Vancouver 2-0 up, after an early opener, and it stood as the winning goal in a game San Diego had to win to stay in the playoff race. Instead, the loss ended San Diego’s season in practical terms, and the visitors left Vancouver eliminated from playoff contention.

How the Whitecaps took control early

The Whitecaps had a chance to open the scoring in the seventh minute, when Larraz struck the crossbar from distance. San Diego striker Cedric Bakambu then had two chances in the 13th minute. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka denied Bakambu once, and defender Mathias Laborda made a goal-line clearance with a diving header off the rebound attempt.

The opener came in the 24th minute. Ryan Gauld found Laborda, who delivered the ball into the centre of the box, and midfielder Aleksa Cvetkovic directed it into the net with his left foot. Cvetkovic joined Vancouver in August after three seasons in the Serbian SuperLiga, and the goal was his first as a Whitecap. Gauld earned an assist on that goal and then scored one of his own.

Gauld gave the Whitecaps a 3-0 lead in the 66th minute, heading in a ball played by forward Rayan Elloumi. Forward Bruno Caicedo added the fourth in the 76th minute, sprinting down the field and firing a right-footed shot from the centre of the box. San Diego midfielder Onni Valakari scored on a header in the 83rd minute, but by then the result was settled and the home crowd was already marking White’s night.

What the Whitecaps win means in the West

The Whitecaps improved to 17-8-7, with 58 points. FC Dallas, in second place, lost 2-0 to the Columbus Crew earlier on Wednesday and dropped four points behind Vancouver. That result, combined with the win over San Diego, left Vancouver able to clinch the top seed in the West with a home win against the Seattle Sounders in its next home game, or with a Dallas loss.

Why the Whitecaps result ends San Diego’s run

San Diego needed all three points against Vancouver to remain in the playoff race. For the second straight year, the Whitecaps eliminated San Diego. The visitors had finished atop the West in their first season in 2025, and they were trying to become the first MLS expansion club to reach the playoffs in its first two seasons since Nashville in 2020-21.

White’s milestone gave the night its headline, but the wider picture mattered just as much for the Whitecaps. The club leads the West with two games to play, holds a four-point cushion over Dallas, and has its next chance to seal first place at home against Seattle. A top seed would give Vancouver home advantage through the Western Conference playoffs, a prize the club can now secure on its own ground.

San Diego, meanwhile, heads into its final games with nothing left to play for in the standings. Its winless run stands at 10 games, its playoff hopes ended in Vancouver, and its second season will close without a return to the postseason. The Whitecaps head into their final games with first place in its own hands.
