The WTC final race took a sharp turn after South Africa beat Australia by 176 runs in the third Test at Newlands, Cape Town, to win their three-match series 2-1. The result moved South Africa to second in the World Test Championship standings and left India fourth, with seven Tests left to play in the 2025-27 cycle.

South Africa defended a target of 288 on the fifth day at Newlands and bowled Australia out for 111, completing a comeback after losing the first Test of the series. The win took South Africa to 60 points and a points percentage of 71.43 from seven Tests. New Zealand lead the table with 52 points and 72.22 percent, while Australia dropped to third with 108 points and 69.23 percent.

India sit fourth with 68 points and a points percentage of 51.52 from 11 Tests. Only the top two teams reach the WTC final, which is scheduled for 9 to 13 June at Lord’s, so India need a strong finish to their remaining fixtures. Their run ends with two Tests away against New Zealand, starting in Wellington on 19 November, followed by five Tests at home against Australia from January 2027.

The WTC final race has been shaped by how little room India now have for error. Cricket.com.au’s analysis of the run home says India will need to win at least five of their remaining seven Tests to realistically surge back into contention, and that six wins would guarantee a place in the final. Winning all seven would take India’s points percentage to 70.37.

WTC final race: New Zealand and South Africa in front

New Zealand moved to the top of the table without playing, helped by South Africa’s win over Australia. The Black Caps have 10 Tests remaining, starting with two at home against India from 19 November, then four away against Australia in December and January, two at home against Sri Lanka in February, and two away against Pakistan in March. Cricket.com.au notes that six wins from those 10 would give New Zealand 64.6 percent, while eight wins would guarantee their place.

South Africa, the reigning champions, have seven Tests left, with five of them at home. They play two Tests against Bangladesh at home from 15 November, three against England at home in December and January, and two away against Sri Lanka in February and March. Four wins from seven could be enough for South Africa, leaving them on 64.28 percent, while five wins would guarantee qualification at 73.81 percent.

Australia’s path is harder after the Cape Town defeat. Coach Andrew McDonald admitted his side was now “a little bit up against it” to qualify. Australia have nine Tests left: four at home against New Zealand and five away in India. To finish above 65 percent, they would need at least five wins and a draw from those nine, and even a 4-0 sweep of New Zealand would not guarantee a place without at least one positive result in India.

WTC final race: what India must do

For India, the WTC final equation starts in Wellington. Winning both Tests against New Zealand would take their points percentage to 58.97, while losing both would drop it to 43.59. The home series against Australia, which begins in Nagpur on 21 January 2027, then becomes the decisive block, because five home Tests offer the most points India can still collect.

India also need results elsewhere to go their way. Drawn Tests in the Australia-New Zealand series would deny both rivals points, and that is one reason cricket.com.au’s analysis says India will likely need to rely on other results as well as their own.

WTC final race: the run home

The WTC final race will be decided over the next five months, with the New Zealand-India series opening the decisive stretch on 19 November. India play their last seven Tests against the two teams directly above them in the table, which means every win also takes points away from a rival. That is the one advantage in India’s position: they do not need to wait for others to slip, because they play the sides they must catch.

South Africa’s win in Cape Town set the WTC final table. New Zealand lead it, South Africa sit second, Australia third, and India fourth with 68 points and 51.52 percent. The WTC final is at Lord’s in June 2027, and the race for its two places now runs through Wellington, Christchurch, Nagpur and the rest of India’s home series against Australia.
