An 18-year-old woman died after being ejected from a moving amusement ride at a fair in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, a carnival ride death that has triggered a criminal investigation and the suspension of the attraction.

Gabriela Rodríguez Tezoco, a 2026 high school graduate, was riding an attraction called “El Péndulo” (“The Pendulum”) at the Cabo San Lucas Traditional Fiestas when she was somehow ejected from her seat while the machine was running, Fox News reported, citing local outlet Expreso. Onlookers stood nearby as it happened.

Emergency personnel, including state investigators and municipal police, rushed to the scene to administer first aid. She was evacuated by ambulance to a local hospital but died of her injuries shortly after arriving, according to local reports.

The Los Cabos city council confirmed her death in a Spanish-language statement: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce that the young woman who was injured in the incident that occurred in the mechanical attractions area of the Cabo San Lucas Traditional Festivals, and who was immediately transferred for medical attention, lost her life despite the efforts of the health personnel.”

News of the carnival ride death spread quickly in the United States, drawing more than 200 daily searches and placing it among the most-searched news stories of the day. People.com and Yahoo News carried additional coverage of the tragedy.

Criminal probe opened into the carnival ride death

The Baja California Sur State Attorney General’s Office has launched a formal probe to determine liability, local outlets reported. Forensic experts in engineering and architecture are examining the ride to verify whether it met safety standards, according to Expreso.

The probe is the first formal step toward assigning responsibility for the carnival ride death. As of the middle of this week, authorities had not named the ride’s operators or made any arrests.

Witness accounts will matter to investigators. What onlookers saw in the seconds before the ejection could help determine whether the restraint system failed or something else went wrong.

Ride suspended as carnival ride death sparks fallout

Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez ordered the total suspension of “El Péndulo” and mandated a preventative safety inspection of all other attractions at the fairground. The fallout has also reached city hall: local officials announced the removal of the head of the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection and Risk Management, according to Mexican news outlets including Opinión Sonora.

An interim director was installed to ensure investigators have unfettered access to the department’s files, safety protocols and operational permits. The shake-up shows how seriously the city is treating the case.

Speaking to a concert crowd at the festival later that same evening, Agúndez urged the community to rally around the grieving family and pledged municipal support. “Today, with the same spirit with which we come together to celebrate, we must come together to support Gabriela’s family,” he said. “It could have been any one of us. You are not alone.”

The mayor’s remarks came hours after the carnival ride death, with the festival still underway. Fox News Digital said it reached out to the local mayor’s office, Baja California Sur Public Security and the Los Cabos Transparency Office for additional details.

Safety questions follow the carnival ride death

The incident has renewed scrutiny of amusement ride regulation and inspection. The central facts are still being established: whether the restraint system worked, whether the ride was maintained to standard and whether operating procedures were followed.

Traveling fairground rides present their own oversight challenge. They are assembled and taken down repeatedly as they move between venues, and the rules that govern them vary by jurisdiction. That is why a single carnival ride death can reopen the wider debate over who inspects what.

Every carnival ride death that reaches this scale puts the same records under a microscope. Investigators will start with the ride’s files, safety protocols and operational permits, the same records the interim civil protection chief was installed to open up. What they find will decide whether the case ends with regulatory action or moves toward criminal charges.

The story remains one of the most-searched news items of the day in the United States.
