Bengaluru FC produced a confident, front-foot display to beat Chennaiyin FC 2-0 in the Southern Derby at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday, with goals from Ryan Williams and Mihailo Perovic tightening the Blues’ grip on top spot in the Indian Super League 2026-27, according to Khel Now.

The hosts controlled the tempo from the first whistle, combining sharp movement, precise passing and clinical finishing to keep Chennaiyin under sustained pressure and create a string of promising openings in the final third.

Bengaluru FC came close to the opener inside the opening quarter of an hour. Williams whipped an excellent cross towards Perovic at the far post in the 10th minute, only for Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz to produce a timely intervention.

The breakthrough arrived through persistence rather than polish. Borja Martinez unleashed a powerful effort that forced Nawaz into a save, but Williams reacted quickest to the rebound and guided the ball home to give Bengaluru FC a deserved lead.

The second goal was a fine example of quick combination play. Martinez linked neatly with substitute Ashique Kuruniyan in the attacking third before floating a cross into the penalty area, where Perovic timed his run perfectly and rose above the defence to power a header into the net.

Bengaluru FC Break Deadlock Through Ryan Williams

Williams was a constant threat throughout, according to the player ratings published by Khel Now. The winger capped a lively attacking performance with the opening goal, while his movement between the lines caused Chennaiyin repeated problems. He operated both centrally and in the number 10 role, linking midfield and attack, and his delivery from corners added another dimension to Bengaluru FC’s attacking play. He earned an 8 out of 10 for his display.

Perovic was rated even higher, earning 8.5 out of 10 for an outstanding performance up front. The striker scored his first goal of the ISL campaign, created three chances and registered two shots on target alongside two off-target efforts. He came close earlier with an audacious attempt that sailed narrowly over Nawaz, and his work off the ball — two tackles and one interception — underlined his commitment.

Martinez collected 7.5 out of 10 for an assist and a creative display, while midfielder Manuel de Iriondo was equally impressive with an 8 out of 10 rating after 17 defensive contributions and calm control in possession.

Bengaluru FC’s Defensive Solidity Frustrates Chennaiyin

At the back, goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu delivered a composed performance, making five saves to protect the clean sheet, according to the ratings. Menno Koch recorded six clearances and Chinglensana Singh kept Chennaiyin’s playmakers Talal and Irfan quiet with well-timed interventions.

There were a few concerns for the coaching staff. Shivaldo Singh endured a mixed outing, picking up a yellow card and fortunate to avoid a second for a series of mistimed challenges. Ricky Meetei was also booked before being substituted, while debutant starter Soham Varshneya — making his first start of the season — impressed with energy, two tackles and two interceptions in a 7.5 out of 10 performance.

Captain Sunil Chhetri came off the bench in the 70th minute and immediately brought intent to the attack, testing Nawaz with a powerful effort on his weaker foot only to be denied by a fine save.

What Bengaluru FC’s Win Means for the ISL Title Race

For Chennaiyin, the ratings told a familiar story of defensive errors. Nawaz, rated 5 out of 10, was adjudged at fault for the second goal after missing his punch, while Emmanuel Imanishimwe endured a difficult evening. Nuno Reis was arguably their best defender, and Madih Talal — rated 7 out of 10 — was their brightest attacking spark despite not being at his best.

The result keeps Bengaluru FC top of the standings and extends their commanding start to the campaign. With an attack that is creating freely and a defence that has now kept Chennaiyin at arm’s length with ease, the Blues look increasingly like the team to beat. Their next fixtures will test whether this early momentum can be converted into a sustained title challenge, but on the evidence of the Southern Derby, Bengaluru FC are setting the standard in the ISL this season.
