Apple may have accidentally confirmed the iPad mini 8. An unreleased iPad mini Smart Folio, carrying model number A3632, appeared on Apple’s French regulatory website this week — and the case matches no current or past iPad mini. The listing, spotted alongside iPhone 18 Pro accessories added in September, is the strongest official hint yet that a new iPad mini is coming.

The listing itself reveals no specifications for the iPad mini 8, but the existence of a new Smart Folio says plenty. A redesigned case suggests design changes to the tablet it is meant for — meaning current iPad mini cases may not fit the next model. Apple added the case to its site recently, and regulatory listings of this kind typically appear only when a launch is near.

The timing fits the rumour mill. Reports point to an iPad mini 8 unveiling on October 27 or 28, alongside new OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro models, an M6 14-inch MacBook Pro, and an M6 iMac. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also reported that the new device will be considerably more expensive than the current $599 model, guessing a price closer to $799. Apple itself has stayed silent, as always, about unreleased products.

What the iPad Mini 8 Is Expected to Include

Earlier leaks from Apple’s own code, uncovered by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, already confirmed the iPad mini 8 exists and revealed product images. The device is expected to run on an A20 Pro chip, move its FaceTime camera from portrait to landscape orientation, and gain a redesigned speaker system with a small groove cut into the top of the display glass, similar to the iPhone’s speaker layout.

The display is the headline upgrade. The iPad mini 8 is rumoured to switch to OLED, and Apple has reportedly tested both 60Hz and 120Hz ProMotion panels for the device. A 60Hz panel would keep costs down and match the iPhone 17e’s approach, but fans are hoping the smoother 120Hz option makes the cut.

Gurman has also reported that the next iPad mini will feature water resistance — a first for Apple’s tablets — and an all-new vibration-based speaker system. The leaked icons from Apple’s code appear to corroborate both claims, and the slightly larger screen rumoured for the device would pair well with the repositioned landscape camera.

Why the iPad Mini 8 Could Cost More

OLED panels are expensive, and the cost could push the iPad mini 8 above even the iPad Air in price. Gurman’s estimate of around $799 would make it one of Apple’s priciest small tablets ever. Between the OLED display, A20 Pro silicon, and a water-resistant design, the bill of materials is climbing — and Apple rarely absorbs those costs itself. Analysts note that small tablets have quietly become luxury items, and Apple seems happy to price them that way.

Still, the iPad mini occupies a unique niche. Its compact size makes it a favourite for reading, note-taking, and travel, and nothing else in Apple’s lineup fills that role. If the iPad mini 8 delivers an OLED screen and a faster chip, many owners of the current model will likely consider the upgrade despite the higher price.

When the iPad Mini 8 Might Launch

The Smart Folio listing is the latest in a string of signs pointing to a late-October debut. Apple debuted new smart home products, a revamped Apple TV 4K, and a refreshed HomePod mini on October 13, and sources indicate a separate event in the final week of October for the new tablet and new Macs. The company has a habit of announcing products this way — quiet regulatory filings appearing just days before a press release. With the listing now live, the announcement could be days away.

Whether buyers accept the higher price will be the real test. The current $599 iPad mini already sits at the premium end of small tablets, and a $799 tag would demand that the OLED display, A20 Pro performance, and redesigned body justify every dollar. For now, the A3632 Smart Folio remains Apple’s loudest hint — an official product page for a tablet that does not officially exist yet.
