The Board of Control for Cricket in India has moved the IPL player retention deadline by two days, from 15 November to 17 November 2026. The IPL retention deadline change was communicated to all ten franchises on Monday, 2 November, giving them extra time to finalise their retained player lists before submitting them to the board. The IPL mini-auction in Goa on 16 December remains on schedule.

The original 15 November cut-off clashed with the fifth and final one-day international of India’s series in New Zealand, which will be played that day at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The IPL retention deadline decision gives franchise management, players and support staff a cleaner administrative day, free from the demands of an ongoing international fixture. With franchise stakeholders and players connected to the Indian squad likely to have their attention on that match, a two-day buffer separates the paperwork from the cricket.

IPL retention deadline: why the date moved

The fifth one-day international at Bay Oval closes a five-match series that starts at Eden Park in Auckland on 4 November and runs through Wellington, Hamilton and two matches at Bay Oval. The retention process involves decisions by owners, coaches and players, many of whom will be travelling or playing during the series. Moving the deadline to 17 November lets those discussions finish after the series ends rather than on the day of its final match.

Once retentions are confirmed, every released player enters the pool available at the Goa auction on 16 December. The revised deadline leaves roughly four weeks between the retention cut-off and auction day, giving the board time to process the lists, work out each franchise’s remaining salary purse and circulate the final auction catalogue. Franchises will have until 17 November to lock in their retained players and submit the official lists.

The IPL retention deadline shift also fits the shape of the New Zealand tour, which runs from 4 November to 15 November. The series starts at Eden Park in Auckland, moves to Wellington and Hamilton, and finishes with two matches at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, on 13 and 15 November. India won their previous one-day series against West Indies at home by 2-1, and the New Zealand trip is the side’s next assignment in the format. Holding the retention cut-off on the day of the final match would have forced franchise staff to split their attention between the tour and the paperwork.

Retention lists matter because they set the size of each squad rebuild. A franchise that keeps most of its core has less money to spend in Goa but more stability on the field, while a franchise that releases several big names goes into the auction with a larger purse and more gaps to fill. The IPL retention deadline is the point at which those choices become public, and the released players then shape the auction pool. That is why the board gave franchises a clean day after the tour, rather than a deadline inside the final match itself.

IPL retention deadline: what happens after the lists are submitted

The player registration window will close on 23 November, after the retention and release process is complete. Teams will then have until 1 December to submit their final list of player choices for the auction. The final auction register, including the player sets, will be released on 3 December, giving franchises almost two weeks to prepare for auction day in Goa. The IPL retention deadline therefore sets off a chain of dates that runs from 17 November to 3 December.

A similar overlap appears on the December calendar, but the IPL retention deadline move does not extend to the auction, and the board has given no sign of moving that date. The second one-day international of India’s home series against Sri Lanka is scheduled for 16 December at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the same day as the Goa mini-auction. The December 16 schedule remains unchanged, and the board has so far said nothing to suggest the auction date will be adjusted to fit around that fixture.

The IPL retention deadline is one of the first fixed points in the build-up to a new Indian Premier League season, because it decides which players stay, which players are released and how much money each franchise has left to spend. The two-day shift is small, but it removes a direct clash with an international match involving the national team. The IPL retention deadline now gives all ten franchises until 17 November to complete their retention and release process before the auction cycle moves to its next stage.
