Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 will begin streaming on Prime Video on 12 November, and the Jailer 2 OTT premiere comes exactly four weeks after the film opened in cinemas on 15 October. Prime Video announced the date on Thursday, 5 November. The film will stream in India and in more than 240 countries and territories, in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada.

The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner, has Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer at the centre of the franchise. It is the sequel to Jailer, which released in 2023, and the original film is already on Prime Video, so both parts of the story will sit on the same platform.

Jailer 2 OTT date ends a four-week cinema window

The Jailer 2 OTT date follows the four-week window that has become common for Tamil films, and it arrives while the film is still playing in cinemas. Filmfare reported that the film has collected about Rs 821 crore worldwide, which makes it the highest grossing Tamil film of all time. Sacnilk figures cited in other reports put the India gross near Rs 545 crore after 22 days.

The short window drew comment from exhibitors. PVR INOX and Cinepolis declined to screen the film because its digital release did not meet their eight-week requirement, according to Sacnilk. Veteran distributor and theatre owner Tiruppur Subramaniam was among those who had hoped Sun Pictures would hold the film in cinemas for longer.

Jailer 2 OTT release in five languages worldwide

The Jailer 2 OTT release will carry the Tamil original and dubbed versions in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. Prime Video said in its announcement that Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is back, and the post used the tag Jailer2OnPrime. A Prime Video executive said the platform was pleased to bring the film to viewers in India and around the world.

The cast around Rajinikanth includes Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Suraj Venjaramoodu. Anirudh Ravichander composed the music. The film follows Muthuvel Pandian as a man living behind the mask of an ordinary car driver, a cover that hides his past as a jailer.

Reports in Indian media have said the streaming version may run about 30 minutes longer than the cinema cut, which would restore material removed before release. Neither Sun Pictures nor Prime Video has confirmed an extended cut, and the runtime of the streaming version has not been announced.

The four-week gap has become a point of argument in the Tamil industry. Producers favour a quick move to streaming, since the digital deal brings in money while the cinema run is still fresh, and the Jailer 2 OTT date follows that pattern. Theatre owners argue that a longer window would let a hit film earn more on the big screen, and they point to the eight-week gap they ask for as the fair split.

The original Jailer set the template for the sequel. It opened in August 2023, ran for four weeks in cinemas, and then moved to Prime Video, where it found a second audience among viewers who had missed it in theatres. The sequel arrives on the same platform with the same gap, and the Jailer 2 OTT premiere will test whether the second film can repeat that second run.

Jailer 2 OTT deal and the box office behind it

Gazettely reported that Prime Video paid a Tamil industry record of Rs 160 crore for the streaming rights, a figure that shows how much the platform valued the sequel after its cinema run. The Jailer 2 OTT premiere also closes a strong run for a film that passed Rs 820 crore worldwide within two weeks of release, according to Sacnilk.

The first Jailer opened on 10 August 2023 and reached Prime Video on 7 September that year, a gap of four weeks as well. The sequel has kept to the same pattern, with the announcement on 5 November and the premiere set for 12 November.

Viewers who missed the cinema run can now watch the film from 12 November on Prime Video, in five languages, alongside the 2023 original.
