The sony vizha channel went on air on Sunday, 19 October, at 8 pm, marking Sony Pictures Networks India’s entry into the Tamil general entertainment market. Built around the brand proposition ‘Ithu Namma Vibe’, the new channel brings Tamil adaptations of global formats, original series, films and cricket to Tamil-speaking households across India through leading cable and DTH platforms.
The launch line-up is headlined by two flagship properties: Tamil Idol and Celebrity MasterChef Tamil. Tamil Idol features A. R. Rahman as super judge, alongside Andrea Jeremiah, Karthik and Benny Dayal as judges, with Vikkals Vikram and Pooja Venkat hosting the Fremantle-produced singing competition. Celebrity MasterChef Tamil brings Samantha Ruth Prabhu on board as celebrity judge, alongside Chef Venkatesh Bhat, Chef Sashi Cheliah and Chef Shreeya Adka, with RJ Vijay hosting the Banijay Asia production featuring 12 contestants.
The channel’s programming slate extends beyond the two tentpoles. Fiction and reality offerings include Notebook 90s – Kadhal Flashback, Crime Patrol – Kutrangal Tharum Echarikkai and Madam Police – Naanga Irukka Bayamen, spanning themes from friendship and nostalgia to real-life crime cases set in Tamil Nadu.
Sony VIZHA Channel Banks on ‘Ithu Namma Vibe’
The ‘Ithu Namma Vibe’ proposition is designed to celebrate Tamil Nadu as it is lived and experienced today, through its language, culture, traditions, aspirations and distinctive way of life. The brand film captures recognisable everyday moments, from food and music to spirited conversations and shared celebrations, through the lens of ‘Vizha’, the Tamil word for celebration.
“Sony Vizha has been created with a simple ambition – to celebrate Tamil Nadu as it is today: confident, contemporary, rooted in its culture and constantly evolving,” said Rajaraman Sundaram, chief content officer for the South region at SPNI. He said the line-up would bring together global formats adapted for Tamil audiences, culturally relevant shows, films and sporting events to connect with viewers across generations and geographies.
Sony VIZHA Channel Line-Up and Marquee Talent
Deepak Dhar, founder and group CEO of Banijay Asia and Endemol Shine India, said the Tamil adaptation of MasterChef would reflect the region’s culinary traditions, noting that the format has been adapted in 74 markets worldwide. “With Samantha coming on board, we’re excited to see the fresh flavour and perspective she brings to the format,” Dhar said, adding that the show would bring together food, competition and popular regional personalities.
SPNI said the channel would focus on premium and differentiated Tamil entertainment rooted in culture and designed for a new generation of viewers, with original content, reality formats, movies and global entertainment curated for Tamil audiences. The channel is available across leading cable and DTH platforms, supported by a strong network of local cable operators.
Advertisers Back the Sony VIZHA Channel Bet
The money has followed quickly. Sony VIZHA has already secured advertiser partnerships with Gold Winner, TTK Prestige and ATM – Akshaya Thanga Maligai, an early endorsement of the channel’s proposition that brings established brands into its growing entertainment ecosystem. The partnerships underscore the opportunity the channel presents for advertisers to connect with Tamil audiences through a new destination.
The launch comes at a time when SPNI’s sports-led growth has been strong, with the company reporting a 16 per cent profit climb in FY26. Whether Sony VIZHA can carve out a distinctive presence in Tamil Nadu’s fiercely competitive GEC space will depend on how quickly its marquee formats convert curiosity into appointment viewing.
The launch also signals SPNI’s growing appetite for regional expansion. The broadcaster’s profit climbed 16 per cent in FY26, driven by its sports portfolio, giving it the balance-sheet confidence to invest in a crowded Tamil GEC market dominated by entrenched incumbents. The channel is available from day one across leading cable and DTH platforms, backed by a strong network of local cable operators to reach Tamil-speaking households across India.
SPNI said the channel would focus on premium and differentiated Tamil entertainment rooted in culture and designed for a new generation of viewers. Whether ‘Ithu Namma Vibe’ can convert launch-week curiosity into sustained ratings will depend on the two flagship formats delivering appointment viewing in their opening weeks.
