Alembic Pharma results for the September quarter showed profit up 81 per cent, helped by strong sales in the United States. Consolidated net profit rose to Rs 335 crore for the three months ended 30 September, from Rs 185 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations climbed 36 per cent to Rs 2,603 crore, from Rs 1,910 crore in the same quarter last year. The board approved the numbers at a meeting on 4 November, and the shares jumped as much as 20 per cent before settling 13 per cent higher.
Alembic Pharma results led by US sales
The US formulations business did the heavy lifting in the Alembic Pharma results. Sales in the United States rose 77 per cent to Rs 1,003 crore, helped by higher volumes and three new product launches during the quarter. The India branded business grew 14 per cent to Rs 725 crore, while the active pharmaceutical ingredients business rose 39 per cent to Rs 436 crore. Together, the three segments show growth spread across the company rather than tied to one product or market.
Operating profit in the Alembic Pharma results rose faster than sales. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation reached Rs 578 crore, up 78 per cent on the year, and the margin widened to 22 per cent from 17 per cent. Profit before tax was Rs 438 crore, against Rs 224 crore a year earlier. Basic earnings per share doubled to Rs 17.05 from Rs 9.40. The statutory auditors issued an unqualified review report, and the company recorded no exceptional items in the quarter.
Alembic Pharma results lift the share price
The market reaction to the Alembic Pharma results was immediate. Alembic shares rose as much as 20 per cent on Wednesday, 4 November, and closed 12.81 per cent higher at Rs 907.20 on the BSE. The rise stood out on a day when the wider market was also strong, which suggests investors read the numbers as a genuine beat rather than a ride on the market mood. Motilal Oswal had expected growth in the US generics business to come from product launches with limited competition, and the quarter delivered on that view.
The standalone numbers were stronger still. Standalone net profit doubled to Rs 409 crore from Rs 179 crore a year earlier, while standalone revenue rose 25 per cent to Rs 2,392 crore. The gap between the standalone and consolidated figures reflects the different scope of the two accounts, with the consolidated numbers covering the company and its subsidiaries. Investors usually track the consolidated figures for the full picture, and those showed profit up 81 per cent and revenue up 36 per cent.
US approvals add to Alembic Pharma results
A day after the Alembic Pharma results, Alembic won final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for its generic version of an over the counter eye drop. The company told the exchanges on 4 November that the approval had come through, and the shares touched Rs 936.95 on 5 November. The US market for the eye drop stood at about $20 million in the 12 months to September 2026, according to IQVIA data. The approval adds another product to the US range, where the company launched three products during the quarter.
Managing Director Pranav Amin said the company delivered another quarter of strong, broad based growth and improved profitability, supported by consistent execution across markets. The comment matches the shape of the numbers, with all three businesses growing and margins widening at the same time. The Alembic Pharma results give the company room to keep investing in US expansion, which the company has said is its aim. Alembic, based in Vadodara, has built its US business on generic drugs with limited competition, and that strategy showed in the September quarter, with US sales up 77 per cent.
The next test is whether the US growth can be repeated. New launches face competition once other generic makers enter, and prices in the US generics market can fall fast when that happens. The India business, growing at 14 per cent, gives the company a steadier base, and the ingredients business adds a third leg. The Alembic Pharma results put the company among the strongest performers of the earnings season, and investors will watch the December quarter for a repeat.
