Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has crossed Rs 800 crore in worldwide gross collections, becoming the first Tamil film to reach that figure. The film passed the mark on Sunday, 1 November, its 18th day in cinemas, after collecting an estimated Rs 11.20 crore net in India on the day. Trade estimates put the worldwide gross at Rs 807.25 crore.

The Sunday figure was up 15.5 per cent on Saturday’s Rs 9.70 crore net in India, according to trade tracker Sacnilk, whose figures were cited by Filmverse. Jailer 2 opened in theatres on 15 October and is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. It is produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner.

Jailer 2 day 18 collections in India

Jailer 2 collected Rs 11.20 crore net in India on day 18, taking its India net total to about Rs 456.30 crore. The domestic gross stood at about Rs 533.75 crore. Overseas markets contributed about Rs 273.50 crore gross, which is roughly 34 per cent of the worldwide total.

The third weekend gave the film a clear lift after a quieter second week. Sunday trading was stronger than Saturday, and the film held shows in a wide range of centres across Tamil Nadu and other southern states. The run has now lasted through three weekends without a major new release to take screens away from it. Trade reports from the previous day had put the film at Rs 790.85 crore worldwide, about Rs 9.15 crore short of the 800 crore line, so the Sunday jump closed that gap in a single day. Cinema Express reported day 17 at Rs 9.35 crore net in India, a rise of about 70 per cent on day 16, which set up the weekend push. The pattern is familiar for a Rajinikanth release in Tamil Nadu, where weekend footfall often rises sharply when families plan a cinema visit together, and the Diwali period added to that effect this year.

Jailer 2 language split across markets

The Tamil version remains the largest contributor to Jailer 2, with about Rs 316.50 crore net in India. The Telugu version added about Rs 84.15 crore net, while the Hindi version added about Rs 48.05 crore net and the Kannada version about Rs 7.60 crore net. The split shows a run that is rooted in Tamil Nadu and spread across the south, with a smaller but steady Hindi audience.

Jailer 2 had already passed the domestic gross of Rajinikanth’s own 2.0 earlier in its run, making it the highest grossing Tamil film ever at the Indian box office. It reached Rs 710.35 crore worldwide in 11 days, according to Filmverse, and kept adding collections through the festive holiday window that followed. The comparison with 2.0 matters because that film, released in 2018, had held the Tamil industry record for eight years. Its India gross of about Rs 520 crore was long treated as a ceiling for Tamil cinema, and the fact that a sequel to a 2023 hit passed it shows how much the market for Tamil films has grown, in India and abroad. Overseas collections, at about Rs 273.50 crore, account for a large share of the total, and that share reflects the size of the Tamil diaspora audience in Malaysia, Singapore, the Gulf and North America, as well as interest from Telugu and Hindi viewers in other states.

Jailer 2 faces a crowded week ahead

The next test for Jailer 2 comes on 5 November, when Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana arrives in cinemas and is expected to take premium screens across India. That release will cut into the screen count available to older films, and the coming weekdays will show how much further Jailer 2 can add after its 800 crore mark. Trade watchers will also look at whether the film can move toward Rs 850 crore worldwide, a figure mentioned in Tamil trade coverage as the next target. That would require steady weekday collections even after Ramayana takes the largest screens, and it would depend on Tamil Nadu holding a share of shows for a film that has already been in cinemas for nearly three weeks. The Diwali week, which runs into the Ramayana release, may help, because family audiences often choose a familiar title for a second visit during the festival period.

In the film, Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer drawn back into conflict. Ramya Krishnan, S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa are part of the cast, with special appearances by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi. The sequel follows the 2023 film Jailer, which grossed more than Rs 600 crore worldwide. All box office figures in this report are trade estimates and may change when final studio figures are released.
