A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Illinois for allegedly plotting a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in the Aurora area near Chicago, in a case that has raised alarm over anti-Indian extremism in the United States. The Hindu temple plot was uncovered after detectives searched the suspect’s home and recovered a rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and a white supremacist manifesto.

The suspect, Alexandros Paporakis, 19, of Palatine, was detained by local police working with the FBI. Officers found a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of rounds of additional ammunition and tactical equipment at his residence. They also recovered a vest containing body armour bearing a patch with imagery associated with white supremacist extremism. The Hindu temple plot, investigators believe, was aimed at a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area.

Investigators also examined a self-titled document attributed to Paporakis, “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora shooter’s manifesto)”. According to police, the document contained statements expressing white supremacist ideology, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent.

How the Hindu temple plot was uncovered

Paporakis faces one count each of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons, involving a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches. A Cook County judge ordered him detained, with the next court hearing scheduled for October 30. Police said the investigation remained active and they had not identified any known ongoing threat to the public.

The Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments coordinated outreach to Hindu places of worship in the area to alert them to the alleged threat. Palatine Police Chief William Nord said: “The seriousness of this alleged threat cannot be overstated,” adding that protecting places of worship was a law enforcement priority. Officers acted swiftly once the Hindu temple plot came to light, officials said.

Hindu temple plot: reaction from officials and community groups

The Hindu American Foundation welcomed the police response, saying on X that it commended law enforcement for swift action. US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and Indian American groups urged the FBI and the Department of Justice to intensify scrutiny of anti-Indian extremism online. The Hindu Mandir Executives’ Conference urged temples to stay vigilant, noting what it described as a troubling pattern of threats against Hindu religious institutions.

India’s Consulate General in Chicago also appreciated the timely action by US law enforcement, officials said. The foiling of the Hindu temple plot has been held up as an example of effective cooperation between local police and federal agencies.

Rising concern over threats to places of worship

The case is the latest in a series of alleged threats targeting religious institutions in the United States, where houses of worship of several faiths have faced attacks in recent years. Authorities have stepped up coordination with temple administrations, and security measures at several Hindu temples in the Chicago area have been reviewed in the wake of the arrest. Community leaders say the Hindu temple plot underlines the need for continued vigilance.

Community organisations said the alleged Hindu temple plot had prompted temples across the Chicago area to review their security arrangements, and police said they would maintain contact with temple administrations in the coming weeks. Leaders of the Indian American community said the case reflected a wider problem of online radicalisation, and echoed calls for federal agencies to devote more resources to tracking extremist content aimed at South Asian and Indian-origin communities.

The case also highlights the role of local law enforcement in disrupting alleged plots before they can be carried out. Police said the recovery of the rifle, ammunition and tactical equipment removed the immediate means of an attack, while the detention order ensured the suspect remained in custody pending trial. As the investigation continues, prosecutors are expected to present further evidence at the October 30 hearing.

Officials stressed that the case remained under investigation and urged the public to report suspicious behaviour. Paporakis is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. If the allegations are proven, the Hindu temple plot would rank among the most serious foiled attacks on a place of worship in recent American history.
