Google is dramatically expanding Android earthquake alerts, taking the system from 98 countries and regions to more than 200 worldwide. The rollout, announced October 15, adds Panama and Guatemala among the newly supported locations. It begins reaching users in the new regions immediately, with full availability expected over the next week.

Launched in 2021, Android earthquake alerts turn ordinary smartphones into a planetary seismic network. When a phone is plugged in and sitting still, its accelerometer acts as a tiny seismometer, detecting the earliest signs of ground movement. If enough phones in the same area report earthquake-like motion, Google’s servers estimate the location and magnitude, then push warnings that can arrive seconds before destructive shaking hits.

The scale is remarkable. Google says the system has sent more than one billion alerts since launch, making it the world’s largest mobile-based earthquake detection network. While there have been a couple of mishaps along the way, the alerts have also saved lives — a few seconds of warning is often enough to drop, cover, and hold.

How Android Earthquake Alerts Work

Users in supported regions can receive three types of warning depending on the expected shaking. Be Aware is a straightforward notification for estimated light shaking, letting users know an earthquake has been detected nearby. Be Ready is a detailed alert for stronger shaking that prompts users to prepare to take action. Take Action is a full-screen alert for moderate to heavy shaking, giving immediate advice on how to stay safe.

The system grew out of California, where early alerts relied on the existing USGS ShakeAlert network rather than phones alone. Google then expanded phone-based detection to Greece and New Zealand in 2021, followed by Turkey, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, and several other countries. India joined the network in 2023, and earthquake warnings reached all 50 U.S. states and six territories in 2024.

New Android Earthquake Alerts Add More Detail

Beyond the geographic expansion, Google is redesigning the Be Ready notification to carry more useful information. In the coming months, Android earthquake alerts will show a map with a radius marking where shaking has been detected, the estimated earthquake magnitude, guidance on what to do, and a button to learn more about the earthquake as information comes in.

The current Be Ready alert is a simpler notification that appears at the top of the screen, telling users an earthquake is nearby and shaking is expected, with a reminder to drop, cover, and hold and a brief description of how far away the epicentre is. The new version keeps that urgency while adding the context people need when every second counts.

Boone Spooner, Google’s Group Product Manager for Earthquake Alerts, said the company’s physical safety products are deeply important to the team. While the team hopes the warnings are never needed, he said they are grateful to bring more information to more people when it matters most.

Why Android Earthquake Alerts Matter Now

Earthquakes remain one of the few disasters that arrive without meaningful advance warning. Traditional seismic networks cover wealthy regions well but leave huge gaps elsewhere. By using the accelerometers already inside billions of Android phones, Google effectively crowd-sources a detection grid that costs almost nothing to extend — which is exactly what makes doubling the coverage of Android earthquake alerts to more than 200 regions feasible.

For users, nothing needs to be installed. The Android earthquake alerts feature works through Google Play Services on supported phones, and the warnings appear automatically when a qualifying quake is detected. Users in the newly added regions should see the feature activate over the coming days as the rollout completes.

As the network grows, its early warnings may reach communities that have never had seismic alerts before. A few seconds of notice — enough to step away from a window, duck under a desk, or stop a vehicle — is the entire point. In that sense, the expansion of Android earthquake alerts is one of the most consequential updates Google has made to the platform this year.
