Sir Patrick Stewart died on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. His longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, said he died after “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia,” the Associated Press and The Hollywood Reporter reported. The family announced the death on Thursday. That is what happened to Patrick Stewart: the actor behind Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier died at home, and the illness behind it had never been made public before.

When and where did he die?

He died Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, “in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny,” according to the statement posted to his social media accounts and quoted by The Guardian and The Independent. The family wrote that he had been “surrounded by live music, prayers, tears, laughter and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire.” He is survived by Sunny Ozell and two children, The Independent reported.

The news broke on Thursday afternoon U.S. time, a day after his death. That day a flower lay on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in a Reuters photo published by The Guardian.

Had his illness been disclosed?

No. AP reported that Stewart’s diagnoses “had not been previously disclosed.” The family statement called the illness “brief” but did not say when he was diagnosed.

As recently as July, Stewart told TV Insider he had no plans to stop working. “I can’t imagine ever officially retiring. I’ll always and forever be an actor,” he said, in an interview Variety described as one of his final ones.

Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia, briefly

The two conditions named in the statement are different diseases, and a person can have both. According to the National Institute on Aging, Lewy body dementia is linked to abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the brain. Those deposits can cause problems with thinking, movement, behavior and mood. The NIA says early symptoms are often confused with Alzheimer’s, that LBD can occur alongside other brain disorders, and that there is currently no cure.

The NIA also says LBD usually begins at age 50 or older and that its course varies a great deal from person to person, so the general picture says little about any one patient.

What was his final role?

His last film is Avengers: Doomsday, in which he plays Professor X again. Marvel Studios called it “his final on-screen appearance” in its tribute, Variety reported. The film opens in theaters on Dec. 18. The BBC also described the Marvel film, due out this Christmas, as his final turn in the role.

He first played Charles Xavier in X-Men in 2000 and came back for X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Logan (2017), along with shorter appearances in other Marvel films, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.

How did a Yorkshire stage actor end up on the Enterprise?

Stewart was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, according to the BBC and The Telegraph. He built his reputation on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, according to The Telegraph and The Independent. He was cast as Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987, a role that brought him the wide popular recognition his stage career had not, The Telegraph’s obituary says. He later played Picard again in the series Star Trek: Picard.

Ian McKellen, his friend and his Magneto opposite in the X-Men films, recalled warning him against the job. In a tribute published by The Guardian, McKellen said he asked Stewart whether he really wanted to risk “getting lost in Hollywood for years and years.” McKellen added: “Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did.”

Stewart was appointed OBE in 2001 and knighted in 2010, The Hollywood Reporter and The Telegraph reported. He published a memoir, Making It So, in 2023, named for Picard’s catchphrase.

What have co-stars said?

Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine alongside him, wrote on Instagram: “We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man,” The Independent reported. LeVar Burton, who played Geordi La Forge on The Next Generation, told The Guardian: “He was family.” Marina Sirtis, who played Deanna Troi, told the paper it was “the privilege of a lifetime to work with him.”

The loss comes days after another Star Trek death. Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original series, died at 90, AP and the BBC reported.

How fans can mark his death

A few concrete options, based on what the family and his longtime causes point to:

  • The family asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts go to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Caregiver Resources, according to The Independent.
  • If someone you love is showing signs of memory or movement changes, the NIA page linked above explains how Lewy body dementia is diagnosed and how to find clinical trials.
  • Animal welfare was one of his causes. The family statement mentioned “his cherished foster pitties,” and The Guardian reported that he campaigned with the ASPCA. A local shelter is a fitting place to give if that side of him meant something to you.
  • Seeing Avengers: Doomsday when it opens Dec. 18 is the last chance to watch a new screen performance from him.
