Christian Watson is OK for now. The Green Bay Packers receiver hurt his chest on a 53-yard catch in the second quarter of Thursday night’s 27-19 win over the Carolina Panthers, rode an ambulance to a hospital for precautionary tests, was cleared and returned to the game in the third quarter, ESPN and Yahoo Sports reported. He finished with eight catches for 113 yards, according to the ESPN box score. The team has not released a formal diagnosis beyond “chest injury.” That is what happened to Christian Watson on Oct. 29, and the next real checkpoint is Green Bay’s injury report before its Nov. 8 game at New England.

Timeline of the night

When (game clock)What happened
First half, before the injuryWatson caught six passes for 100 yards.
2nd quarter, 9:11 leftHe caught a 53-yard pass from Jordan Love. Panthers cornerback Will Lee landed on him at the end of the play, and both players stayed down, according to NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk and the Associated Press.
Moments laterWatson walked off on his own, went to the sideline medical tent, then to the locker room. ESPN reported he climbed into the ambulance himself with his pads still on. The Packers called it a chest injury and said the hospital trip was precautionary.
Shortly after halftimeThe team said he had cleared testing at a local hospital and was on his way back. He was listed as questionable to return.
3rd quarterHe arrived at Lambeau Field in the same ambulance, jogged onto the sideline to a loud ovation and, with 4:01 left in the quarter, went back into the game with Green Bay up 27-13. He was targeted on his first play back.
FinalPackers 27, Panthers 19. Watson caught two more passes after his return, finishing with eight for 113 yards.

What the sideline showed

Prime Video reporter Kaylee Hartung said Watson came back wearing extra padding around his ribs and pointed to the lower right side of his chest when teammates asked about it, CBS Sports and USA Today’s Touchdown Wire reported. Reports so far have not said which tests were run or what they showed, only that he was cleared to play.

Lee did not come back. The Panthers said he hurt his hamstring on the same play, and he was carted to the locker room, the AP reported. Carolina already had three cornerbacks on injured reserve: Akayleb Evans, Mike Jackson and Jaycee Horn.

Has this happened to him before?

Yes, and recently. During a December 2025 game at Denver, Watson was taken to a Denver-area hospital for testing, Packers Wire reported at the time. ESPN said this week that the hospital visit was to check for broken ribs, that the tests were negative and that he played the following game.

Touchdown Wire noted his broader injury history, which includes a concussion, several hamstring injuries and a torn ACL.

The game around it

The win moved Green Bay to 5-3, and Carolina fell to 3-4, according to the AP game recap carried by ESPN. Love threw three touchdown passes, to Tucker Kraft, Matthew Golden and Josh Jacobs, and Jacobs also ran for a score. Watson’s 53-yarder set up the Jacobs touchdown run that put the Packers ahead for good at 13-10.

Watson was not Green Bay’s only injury. Tight end Josh Whyle was evaluated for a concussion in the first half, the AP recap said, and Pro Football Talk reported that the Packers ruled him out for the rest of the game. That could matter for the passing game if Whyle is still in the concussion protocol next week.

Carolina made it close late. Bryce Young hit Jalen Coker for a 26-yard touchdown on fourth-and-3 with 5:37 left, but the two-point try failed, and the Panthers turned the ball over on downs on their next drive.

Our take: what to watch before Nov. 8

Playing a Thursday game gives Green Bay a long gap. The Packers’ next game is at the New England Patriots on Nov. 8, the AP said, which leaves about 10 days for Watson to recover. Here is how we would read the coming news:

  • Watch the first injury report of next week. A full practice would suggest no lingering issue. A “limited” tag would point to soreness that the training staff is managing.
  • Listen for coach Matt LaFleur’s comments in his next press session. Any added detail on the injury would most likely come from him.
  • For fantasy managers, being cleared at the hospital and his return to the game are good signs. Watson had 100 yards before he got hurt, and the extra days off help. Still, wait for that practice report before treating him as a sure starter in Week 9 lineups.

If the Packers release more on his condition, we will update this page.
